Margaret Jenkins Elementary School, Seismic Upgrade

Margaret Jenkins is a heritage registered school (1914) with new additions in 1956 and 1965. The seismic upgrade incorporated interior steel brace frames within the original 1914 building and new concrete exterior shear walls in the 1956 and 1965 wings. The new structural elements are designed to sympathetically integrate within the heritage fabric. The addition of patterned concrete shear walls at the corners of the 1956 wing provided additional shear strength and creatively expressed the structure of the seismic upgrade.

The entire school was relocated to a vacant school during this seismic upgrade. Construction management allowed for a fast track approach and completion with one year.
